JCI (Junior Chamber
International) is an independent out of hours organisation providing
opportunities to its members for community/voluntary work, social activities,
personal development, and business networking. It is an excellent way to meet
new people.
JCI is a worldwide organisation
with approximately 400,000 members in 123 countries. In England, Wales and
Northern Ireland it is represented by JCI United Kingdom (JCI UK). JCI UK
operates through a regional structure and the largest of these regions is JCI
Yorkshire which is made up of 7 local chambers Barnsley, Bradford, Doncaster,
Hull & East Yorkshire, Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield. Within JCI UK there
are some 40+ chambers.
JCI draws its membership from
all walks of life. The organisation is NOT just for 'business' people.
Membership in Yorkshire currently includes solicitors, secretaries, nurses,
company directors, accountants, teachers, self-employed business people,
computer programmers, civil service employees, students, PR executives, sales
people and local government workers, to name but a few!
Some of JCI's more famous past
members have included US Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Clinton, UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan, Bob Hawke (former Prime Minister of Australia),
Jacques Chirac (former President of France), Ted Turner (founder of CNN), Poul
Schluter (former Prime Minister of Denmark) and Chen Shui-bian (10th president
of Taiwan).
The strong international
presence of JCI provides many opportunities to travel abroad. In recent years,
members have been to Japan, Poitiers and Vienna, with opportunities to visit
Estonia and Korea coming up in 2006.
The ONLY criteria for
membership is that you are between the ages of 18 and 40. So why not contact us
or your local chamber.
Yorkshire Junior Chambers would
like to thank our regional sponsors Yorkshire Water and Cedar Court Hotels.
